Universal Project has been on a roll, and this monster from Innerground is their best yet.

Universal Project is a name that those who were really into this dnb thing should remember. Twenty years ago, this foursome hit the scene, dropping mind-bending cuts like “Bleach,” “Haunted Dreams,” and “The Craft,” soon getting releases on Renegade Hardware, True Playaz, and Virus. By 2007, their reign was over, but in 2018, there was a reemergence, although at this point, Universal Project is (according to their Discogs) being solely manned by Ruxspin, one of the original four.

Universal Project byke?!

If you haven’t been paying attention, the Universal Project has returned to form. Just one week after the release of an impressive two-track release on Dispatch, Universal Project links with Taelimb for a three-track EP, Mouse Trap, on DJ Marky’s Innerground imprint. The first two tracks—Universal Project and Taelimb’s collab on the title track and Taelimb’s “Lemongrass”—are strong on their own, but alongside Universal Project’s “Lose Control”? That last tune really closes out the EP, turning it into a stronger release than you may realize.

Universal Project’s “Lose Control” brings the nostalgia

There’s something about the blend of those vocals being wrapped around that anthemic bass. It’s a tune that goes straight for the throat; there’s no messing about when “Lose Control” drops. It feels like something that would have had DJs feverishly rewinding in the club. It’s got something for everyone, and might be one of the best tunes of 2021.

Trust we! Grab this one via Innerground today, and stream “Lose Control” in full below.
